Supporting Neurotypical Siblings in Special-Needs Families

Rising Above Ministries

In families with children who have disabilities, the neurotypical siblings—sometimes called “shadow siblings”—can feel overlooked as their brother or sister receives much of the attention and care. This video explores the unique struggles these siblings face, from feeling invisible to dealing with guilt, confusion, or pressure to be perfect. But it also highlights the strength and resilience they can develop along the way. Church leaders can play a big role in supporting these kids—by listening to their feelings, helping them explore their own gifts, and reminding them they are seen, valued, and loved.
